Great pianists create live soundtracks of masterpieces of silent films.
Modern Times is a silent film festival with live music, following the tradition of the early days of cinema. However, its purpose is not simply to nostalgically emulate that genesis, but to use classic films, in many cases hundreds of years old, as a starting point for outstanding pianists of diverse musical styles to construct and perform live, with total freedom, the soundtrack of each film work.
Reviving the figure of the pianist in the screening rooms of the incipient silent films, the Nino Díaz Foundation organizes a musical journey through the early stages of cinema on the island of Lanzarote, with the participation of prominent directors. This is achieved through the musical accompaniment of outstanding pianists who create live soundtracks for the films, reviving the magic that filled the screening rooms more than a century ago.
It is relevant to mention that the Festival was born from the lack of knowledge about the cinematographic heritage and the compositions that used to accompany its projection. The aim is to collaborate with the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the City Council of Arrecife to create a unique, entertaining event, suitable for the whole family and without language barriers.
